Aude de Thuin, founder of Women in Africa, entrepreneur and creator of the Women’s Forum gives us her point of view on female entrepreneurship in Africa and the strength of African women who have shown resilience, incredible courage and amazing energy.
“It has long been said that African women are the future of the continent. Today, they are his chance, as a journalist friend pointed out to me. Faced with the crisis caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, African women entrepreneurs have shown themselves to be reactive and combative. We have proof of this with the winners of the WIA 54 award. Of the 156 awarded in 2020, only 14 have ceased their activities. All the others have taken advantage of this crisis to either renew themselves or develop. This is also linked to the fact that Africa is more spared than the rest of the world from Covid-19. Women who are the first victims of just about everything the world experiences that is dramatic, are also the first to find solutions and imagine a different future for their village, their city, their country and in so doing their continent. African women, as often in times of crisis, demonstrate resilience, incredible courage and amazing energy. They are more and more prevalent in the health, education, and tech sectors. Also, I don’t think we will see a decline in female entrepreneurship or an increase in the obstacles that will stand in the way of African women leaders even if we have to wait until the third quarter and the economic repercussions from abroad. But, you know, before the crisis, the G7 and the G20 decided to allocate sizeable funds to boost female entrepreneurship in Africa. Nevertheless, there is a risk of a slowdown in funding for women entrepreneurs, who are still too many who do not dare to set up larger companies. It is a recurring problem around the world. While in many countries, men meet together to discuss the Post-Covid world. It will be interesting to look to Africa to see how women in senior positions and entrepreneurs will succeed in asserting themselves in this reconstruction. They are powerful. The continent needs them. ”
